Trevor Noah says 'Africa' won the world cup, gets sharp rebuke from French Ambassador.
WHO is right? Are people solely citizens of a country or should they be hyphenated??

Personally I'm with the French here. Vive le Republique.

Is this the Trevor Noah that makes sexist/racist remarks about aboriginal women in his "unfunny" comic routine?

I saw Noah’s response and while it’s interesting, I think that the US and South Africa are the outliers when it comes to defining people by their race, due to their history of extreme racism. Even people who hate and fought racism in those countries have internalised racist and segregationist ideologies and see the world through the prism of the almost meaningless concept of race.

The French on the other hand, while they have their share of racism, also have a culture that aspires to equality and fraternity. They fight racism by downplaying the importance of race and highlighting the importance of equality and fraternity between races, religions and cultures.

It’s a different approach to the US and, I assume, South Africa, and considering how backward the US and South Africa have been and are regarding racism and social issues, I suspect that it’s the more enlightened one.

Not about what race you are.

Every human on this planet has either blood type O, A, B, or AB, and within these types, you either have RH positive or RH negative blood. The Rhesus (Rh) factor refers to a specific antigen in the blood. If your blood lacks the Rh antigen, you are Rh-negative.

If your blood has the antigen, you are Rh positive. About 85% of the population has the antigen. 15% does not, and are considered ‘Rh- Negatives’

RH Positive blood can be traced back to the Rhesus monkey and all other primates, but RH negative blood CANNOT. In fact, it cannot be traced anywhere else in nature.

The Basque people of Spain and France have the highest percentage of Rh negative blood. About 30% have Rh negative blood and about 60% carry one RH negative gene. The average among most people is only 15%-Rh negative, while some groups have very little.

He's right. Most of their players are either from Africa or their parents were born there.

Still, they're not breaking any laws so fair do's to them, I guess.

"To CAP it all, he's a wealthy French farmer....", would have been more accurate - and the long-necked sozzled one would surely have EU-ingly approved.

I said to one of my French pals "Allez les blues" and his response was "Allez les noirs"!
I didn't understand and really thought I had made a mistake but he explained "They aren't really French are they? They're African..."

I was very surprised. I'd never before heard him make a racist comment! He's a wealthy French farmer....

I suppose he is not wrong in one sense but you could also argue Neanderthal man won it following that argument ? ;-) Btw, don't want to hear that Neanderthal man did not play football.

Exhibit A = Wimbledon FC in the 80s or our own Keith Robson ?

Probably all Basil D'Oliveira's fault. Or something.

Who cares? Artifically designated lumps of land, with arbritarily defined populations, playing in sporting tournaments ruled by corrupt bodies driven by finance, arbitrating sets of rules created for political convenience. Shmuh.

This is because the only ones who can call themselves American are the native Indians, therefore those Americans born from descendants from overseas they put that nationality before the word American to distinguish themselves.

In a response to the ambassador, Noah makes some very, very good points. I'm with him on this one.

Well, most Americans seem to think they're Irish despite the fact in many cases you are talking about a separation of several generations and the fact that they probably couldn't even name the capital city of Ireland.

I'm more Irish than most of them seeing as 3 out of 4 of my grandparents were actually Irish, but I still consider myself English. I was born in Ireland but seeing as I have lived in England since I was a kid, if someone were to ask me where I'm from there is always only one answer. I'm English.

I was raised here by an English family. I don't deny my heritage and I love my extended Irish family and am proud of where I'm from, but it's all about where you were raised, for me.

I'd never call myself Irish-English. It doesn't make sense.

Re: Trevor Noah says 'Africa' won the world cup, gets sharp rebuke from French Ambassador.
Norman Tebbitt had it right. The cricket test shines the clearest light.

Noah was right and the Ambassador was wrong, idealistic and well-intentioned, but wrong nonetheless. Go through an Algerian suburb of France when the two teams are playing and you won’t find many cheering when France score. Same here, if Pakistan beat England in the cricket World Cup, they’ll be green flags hanging out of the windows of the cars driving up and down Green St.

Basically it boils down to the different views the yanks and frogs have on race.
We're closer to the French, as you wouldn't describe Dele Ali as a Nigerian-Englishman, but the Americans are always banging on about African-Americans, Irish-Americans etc.
